As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, the King's elder sister, Princess Galyani Vadhana, passed away on January 1st. To pay her respect, the government declared a period of mourning for 15 days. Along with cancelling any public celebrations, Thais were also instructed to wear black, and I heard, but didn't see, that television broadcasts on the 1st were to be in black and white (except for commercials). Once again, it's difficult for an American or, I imagine, any citizen of a country without a King to truly appreciate the reverence Thais have for their Monarchy.
Here are some sombre pictures from this past Monday of my usually ''very yellow" office.
