Bangkok New Year

Unlike years past, I didn't join the factory new year party. I was supposed to join Nuch on her flight to Australia, but could not get on, which left me alone in Bangkok.

Fortunately, my buddy, Carl, got approval from his wife and 2 year old daughter to go out for the night. Having spent New Year's on Kao San Rd on numerous occasions, we decided to try something new - Bangkok's Red Light District. It may sound seedy, but if you've ever been, you'd notice it's more of a tourist attraction with the Bars being mixed with nice restaurants and popular shopping stalls. It's not uncommon to see an entire family taking in the the action with the mom buying fake Gucci bags, the kids getting the latest pirated video games, and the dad kicking himself for not coming alone.

Our first stop, was at Titanium, a bar with an all-girl band - the Thai equivalent of the Go-Gos.

For New Year's most of the bars had free Bar BQ.

Inside one of the bars, the owner had filled the floor with Styrofoam pellets. Here's Carl and two friends from Thunderbird that are working in Thailand.

Whatever the owner paid up front, I'm sure he made back with lost wallets, mobile phones, and perhaps the keys to a car parked outside.

Here's the countdown.

Outside, this guy was singing popular Thai Folk songs, otherwise known at Dr. Dance or Children of the fields.

At the front of the street, are some of the best burgers in the world - especially at 2 am.

No New Year is complete without fireworks - unless you're on the inside of a club. Fortunately, these were being shot off outside, but in the middle of a 3 story courtyard.
